If the car key won't turn on, you need to replace it. This guide will guide you through how to do it on the Saab 9-3. You'll require a replacement key with a reprogrammable battery and a brand new key-fob case.
Modern Saab models utilize transponders instead of a metal key to unlock the vehicle and allow it to start. The issue with this is that the reprogrammable battery inside the key-fob will wear out and won't hold a charge anymore. This is particularly true if you use the same key for the lock you have.
A professional locksmith can change the battery fairly easily. You can also do it yourself if you have the necessary tools and a little bit of patience. The first step involves separating the key-fob. Insert a flathead into the slot in the middle of your case. You will need to work slowly, as the plastic is extremely thin and easily damaged.
When the case is opened and you are able to prepare the new key by combining the lower section of the old key with the transponder and banana on the new key. This will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM properly, which can make a big difference when replacing the original key for your Saab 9-3.
How to Replace the Ignition Key on the Saab 900
If you don't have two keys you'll need to remove the dashboard and steering wheel for access to the ignition. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Once the battery is disconnected, it is possible to remove the dashboard and trim pieces around the steering wheel. Once the dash has been removed, insert a screwdriver in the opening behind the ignition switch.
The ignition barrel is equipped with a key lock which could stop the vehicle from starting if it does not have a key. If the ignition switch on your 900 isn't functioning, check the key to determine if it's in the lock or stuck in the barrel of ignition. It's also an excellent idea to rotate your keys often and clean them regularly so that they don't get bent.
Saab cars differ from other cars due to the fact that they don't have traditional metal keys. Instead, the car can recognize the electronic signals generated by the key fob through a special chip embedded in it.
If you lose your only working key fob, the dealer will charge the highest dollar for replacing your computer module (known as the CIM). However, we can reprogram the computer's EEPROM, and then prepare it to accept new keys without replacing it. You'll save up to 50% off the price charged by the dealer! We call it the SAAB KEY PROGRAM. Find out more about it here!

The metal portion of the classic Saab keys is simple to duplicate and doesn't present a major threat to theft of vehicles. The electronic portion of the key-fob has an embedded chip that can identify the car when the key is placed in the ignition switch.
Saab's anti-theft device has been relying on this technology for over a decade. It's not as secure as an actual lock on the door however it makes the process of stealing your vehicle more difficult. Every Saab owner must keep a spare Saab key in their vehicle.
Most new Saabs come with two keys at the factory, but you can buy more keys from the dealer with a handheld computer referred to as a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception is NG 9-3 cars, which are equipped with more modern and advanced features that require a different key-fob and use a different method of operation.
If you lose all keys and the dealer replaces your CIM or TWICE modules, and charge you an extra fee. We can reprogram your computer's EEPROM to accept new keys without replacing expensive modules.

It could be time to replace your SAAB key fob if it is experiencing issues turning the lock barrel. Fortunately, the process is relatively simple and doesn't require you to visit a dealer. Instead you can do it yourself at home using a few simple tools.
The first step is to prepare the new key. Before you begin, ensure that the anti-theft system is disabled by placing blocks on your rear wheels and releasing the handbrake. After that, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position which activates the accessories but doesn't start the engine. Repeat this process five times, and then leave the key in the on position.
You'll then need to purchase a new case for your key fob. You can find them at any auto parts store, and they're typically very affordable. You can purchase them without electronics depending on the model.
To open the case, insert a flathead screwdriver inside the slot in the middle and slowly work it. After you have split the case, you will have access to all the internal electronics. To remove the electronics, make use of a small screwdriver and try to pry them out with a gentle force.
